Physical appearance of the Night Fury

Toothless is the only Night Fury seen so far in the franchise. His physical appearance is therefore the only thing we can study to understand the anatomy of this species.

Its entire body is covered in jet-black scales. At first, its flanks and wings are dotted with small light spots similar to those of a manta ray, but in the second film, these spots faded, and in the third, they disappeared completely, making its darker coloration more uniform.

Toothless 's wings come in two sets: a main pair and a smaller pair positioned near the base of his tail. The main pair allows him to take off vertically. Behind it is a smaller pair of wings that help him glide. 🐉

Toothless

Toothless artwork

At the end of his tail, he had two natural caudal fins that helped him steer and stabilize himself, but he is missing the left side of his tail fin, which was lost when Hiccup shot Toothless with his cannon. This fin has been replaced by a mechanical one that Hiccup builds himself. That's why he is often seen wearing the fin and the saddle that goes with it.

Toothless has a fairly large scar on his right shoulder, about a meter long and a centimeter wide. Toothless 's eyes are a bright green, sometimes acid or emerald. They are set very close to the front of his face, giving him excellent depth perception and reflexes while flying.

When threatened or angry, its pupils can constrict into slits, like a cat's. Conversely, when docile or happy, its pupils dilate and look more like a dog's.

Toothless the Dragon

Night Fury Artwork

Toothless gets his name from his remarkable ability to retract his formidable fangs. In How to Train Your Dragon 2, the spines on his head and forelegs are slightly longer. He also has three additional sets of plates growing on his lower jaw. Furthermore, we discover that he sports a sleek row of spines running along his back, perfect for executing sharp turns with ease. Toothless was unaware of this, but it was revealed by Valka.

Otherwise, he's identical to how he was in the first film. Toothless is also much more cheerful than when he first met Hiccup. Valka also reveals that Toothless is the same age as Hiccup. This might be another reason why the two get along so well.

When he enters Alpha mode, Toothless is adorned with blue markings that shimmer with the brilliance of fire, decorating his back, fins, spines, and forehead. His nostrils also glow, as does the back of his throat.

Toothless's personality

Toothless is the most intelligent of all known dragons and seems to have a dry sense of humor, similar to Hiccup's. When Hiccup freed him, he didn't kill him, perhaps sensing Hiccup's kindness. He remained very wary and didn't let Hiccup near him for several days.

He doesn't appreciate being offended and is very protective of his human friend. He is generally quite cheerful and even a bit mischievous when he isn't threatened. He displays great curiosity, mimicking Hiccup's actions and mannerisms when they first meet, and can understand Hiccup's words and commands and agree with some of what he says.

Toothless the Dragon

Toothless the Dragon

It does not escape us that he perfectly captured the complicity between Harold and Astrid, even going so far as to subtly tease this complicit dynamic, even if he created it in a way with the romantic flight scene in the film How to Train Your Dragon, which Toothless did so that Harold and Astrid could meet.

Toothless can sometimes display a certain attitude, reflecting the dry humor he shares with Hiccup. He's not easily intimidated, and his brash audacity can sometimes get him into trouble. Unlike Hiccup, he doesn't hesitate to use violence to achieve his goals, but he generally refrains when asked to do so.

Overall, it is in his relationship with Harold that Toothless 's greatest personality traits are found. Equally protective and loyal, he never hesitates to risk his own life when Harold is in danger and shows himself to be more than affectionate when the time demands it.

Toothless

The Night Fury

His sense of devotion is also evident when it comes to protecting Hiccup's allies and other friends. Toothless showed he had a bit more of Hiccup's personality when he confronted Investigator, seeing the fear in the other dragon's eyes, as it reminded him of his first encounter with Hiccup. Other examples of his willingness to help other dragons include protecting Thunderbolt and Fleet from a Boiling Water pod and the Night Terrors from Deathwing's pack. On several occasions, Toothless could have chosen to save himself or die alongside Hiccup, but he chose not to leave him.

Despite his inability to speak, Toothless communicates his emotions extensively through facial expressions and body language. He has even been seen emitting a sort of laugh and casting critical glances when he dislikes something.

Toothless the Dragon's Abilities and Skills

Intelligence and Communication Skills

As a Night Fury , Toothless's intelligence is unmatched among other known dragons , and he often displays incredible wit and strategic thinking. He is capable of understanding human jokes and recognizing humor, and he even has his own unique cluck (his version of laughter), which is heard throughout the franchise.

Toothless seems to be one of the few dragons to display creativity, as evidenced by his repeated attempts at drawing. Much of Toothless 's intelligence and skill stems from his curiosity, as he is always trying things he has never attempted before. He has learned to understand silent commands through hand signals and gestures, and Hiccup has also taught him to recognize his rider's dragon call as a summoning.

Night Fury

Harold and Toothless

In episode 8 of "Dragons: Race to the Edge," season 3, he was able to outwit a Razorwhip in a dragon fight and realized how powerless the Triplattak was, deciding to spare the dragon. 🐲

Speed and agility of the Night Fury

The book *The Art of How to Train Your Dragon* notes that Toothless can fly at over 160 km/h and that his design reflects his status as the "Ferrari of dragons." His aerial acrobatics, although requiring Hiccup's help, allow him to escape rather brutal confrontations without too much difficulty.

Toothless the Dragon

Toothless with Harold

Even when not flying, Toothless can move across the ground at impressive speeds and is one of the most agile dragons on Earth, capable of leaping from trees, rocks, walls, and more. In Maggie Testa's Book of Dragons, it is stated that Night Furies can fly at speeds exceeding the speed of sound, reaching 1207 kilometers per hour.

Strength and combat

Toothless proved to be extremely strong for a dragon of his size, capable of holding his own against other, larger dragon species such as the Monstrous Nightmare, the Hideous Braguettaure, the Murmur of Death, the Tripletak, and the Razorblade. He can carry heavy objects, such as rocks and branches, with his front paws alone, as well as large adult humans like Stoick, Gobber, Alvin, and Drago Bloodfist.

Night Fury

Toothless and Harold

While carrying Hiccup on his back, he was able to effortlessly carry Hookfang and Snotlout's extra weight, throw Dogmouth, and catch Fart and Farting when they fell off a cliff. When flying at full speed, he can send a dragon-proof ballista plummeting straight into the sea. As an attack-class dragon, Toothless possesses a vise-like jaw that can exert tremendous force. 👊

Stamina and Endurance

Toothless can fly longer than any other dragon. However, he became exhausted during the initial search for the Crayfish and while carrying heavy objects or someone heavy like Stoick for an entire day. He demonstrated the ability to run long distances without any signs of fatigue, from the Cove to the Kill Ring.

Toothless 's body tissues are significantly tougher than those of ordinary dragons, and he is also able to withstand considerable damage in battle from Hookfang, the warriors of Berk, and Stoick the Vast. He can withstand his rival's attacks without appearing to be affected. After being poisoned by the Tripletak, he remained able to fight and defeat it.

Toothless face

The Night Fury

Crossbow bolts and spears don't penetrate Toothless 's skin. However, arrows do occasionally pierce his skin, meaning some of these instances might be animation errors. He was also able to fly for a short time after being hit by a dragon root arrow. However, he didn't recover as quickly as other dragons. 🐉

Keen senses

Toothless seems to have incredibly keen hearing, able to hear Hiccup's cries for help from the Cove, even when Hiccup is in the arena, and even hear a small insect like a fly buzzing in the distance. This sense of hearing plays a role in his ability to use sonar, and he is seen using it to locate the Dragon's Nest. 🐲

He tracks Harold using his sense of smell, but loses it when Harold flies off on the back of a Viper Dragon. He also seems to have the ability to see at night, although Harold questioned this when he flew into the dark cave, meaning his vision might not be very good in the dark, especially in complete darkness.

Toothless

Toothless the Dragon

He is, however, capable of echolocation like a bat, emitting sounds and listening for them to bounce off surrounding objects, allowing him to orient himself in the dark. However, his keen sense of hearing can often be used against him, making him relatively easy to control and influence by the call of an Alpha Dragon and even the Sirens' Death Song. His sense of smell can also be used against him, as seen in episode 15 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Defenders of Berk," when Toothless tries to break up a fight between Stormfly and Hookfang, he smells the scent of dragon root, which compels him to fight for it.

Toothless's Stealth and Lightning Bolt

Toothless 's black scales and extreme speed make him difficult to spot, especially at night or in dark places. Toothless can move silently, even in total darkness, becoming one with the shadows. He demonstrated this when facing the Volchemar and battling the Red Death in the film "How to Train Your Dragon".

Toothless, camouflage light!

Toothless using lightning

Toothless can channel lightning, allowing him to temporarily disappear, much like a Light Fury. The lightning Toothless channels around his body also electrocutes anything nearby. This ability appears to be linked to his Alpha Mode, as his quills, the ridge between his eyes, the inside of his mouth, and his nose glow a translucent blue.

Toothless the Dragon's Fire Power

Toothless can produce several types of fire. His favorite attack is the dive-bomb, firing a precise and incredibly powerful blast, strong enough to destroy catapults and even knock over a Red Death in one hit. He can also reduce the power of his shots for non-violent purposes, and this level of control also allows him to ricochet his blasts off other surfaces, such as cliff faces.

Toothless Attack

Toothless the fire-breather

Toothless's saliva

Interestingly, Toothless 's saliva possesses incredible healing properties. However, this was only mentioned in episode 16 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Riders of Berk" to heal Snotlout's tongue after he ate some strange berries. It's possible that Hiccup invented this line to convince Snotlout to put his tongue in a bowl of saliva, and that the effect of the berries simply wore off.

Toothless's saliva

Toothless's saliva

Harold also stated that Toothless 's saliva cannot be washed off. It has also been proven to be an effective adhesive, stronger than human saliva, as demonstrated by Harold when he uses it to glue pieces of his map. It can also mix with crushed scales to fireproof objects, as shown by Toothless's tail and Harold's armor.

Night Fury Echolocation

In episode 19 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Riders of Berk," it is revealed that Toothless can use echolocation to guide himself and Hiccup out of the cave in which they were trapped. Hiccup later recalls that Toothless made a strange sound that bounced back to them, and that he was able to use it to find his way out.

Krokmou Echolocation

Toothless's Echolocation

He also used this ability in episode 14 of "Dragons: Defenders of Berk" when they flew over the frozen sea in search of Yohan's ship. He can then use it to see into the clouds, which he does when searching for the Crayfish.

Toothless's dive-bombing

As a Night Fury, Toothless is agile enough to execute powerful dive-bombing techniques that can bring down a giant dragon like the Red Death.

Toothless Dive Bombardment

Harold and Toothless

The dive-bombing attack is almost always accompanied by a high-pitched whine. This allows him not only to reach incredible descent speeds, but also to increase the power of his plasma blasts for greater damage, while precisely guiding them to their target. Toothless, however, is unable to fully utilize this ability when confined in tight spaces while flying.

Display of Alpha dominance

After being sufficiently enraged by Drago's Ice Beast, Toothless was able to "charge" himself in a way that granted him increased strength and a more powerful, seemingly limitless fire. This also gave him a more menacing appearance, with his back, nose, and mouth glowing a blue similar to his fire. It was in this state that he challenged the Ice Beast.

In Dragons: Rise of Berk, this glowing effect is called Toothless 's Titanwing stage, while in School of Dragons, this appearance is called "Alpha," indicating that the franchise isn't sure what to call this effect. Toothless became the Alpha of all dragons at the end of How to Train Your Dragon 2. However, some dragons can ignore his dominance.

Toothless Alpha Dragon

Toothless Alpha Blue

Baby dragons have no regard for anyone. Similarly, dragons gripped by panic or reckless frenzy do not listen or are unable to listen. This is shown in the book "How to Train Your Dragon: The Green Menace," when a large group of frenzied Weavers ignores Toothless and ensnares him. It is also revealed that dragons drugged with Deathgripper's venom are immune to his commands.

Human relations

Harold Horrib' Haddock III

Toothless , Hiccup's loyal companion, shines as an Alpha from the end of How to Train Your Dragon 2, earning the respect of every dragon who meets his gaze. He also shares a close bond with the majestic Light Fury. From their union are born three incredible hybrids, the Night Furies, of which Toothless is, of course, the proud father.

In the world of How to Train Your Dragon, Hiccup feels a deep reluctance to harm his future partner in adventure, even though it's partly because of him that Toothless has to use a prosthetic rudder. Driven by guilt, Hiccup strives to bond with this extraordinary dragon . 🐉

Toothless and Hiccup

Harold and Toothless

Faced with centuries of mistrust between Vikings and dragons, this intrepid young man manages to forge an unlikely friendship with a flying creature. He realizes that harmony between humans and beasts is entirely possible. The enormous intellectual gap between the "skinny" and the rest of the village transforms Toothless into the ultimate friend, a soul that only Hiccup can truly understand.

After the victory against the Red Death, Hiccup and Toothless 's destinies become intertwined, remaining inseparable. Their brotherly bond opens new possibilities for the inhabitants of Berk to forge deep connections with their dragons. Toothless literally becomes the other half of this brave man.

In the captivating chapter of How to Train Your Dragon 3: The Hidden World, their bond proves so strong that they struggle to separate, even if this ordeal is only temporary.

Stoick the Brute

Toothless and Stoick got off to a bad start from their very first encounter. Stoick charged at Toothless, deeming him the ultimate threat to the island and the "unholy offspring of lightning and death itself." Seeing Stoick the Vast as the greatest threat while Hiccup needed protection, Toothless attacked him. Stoick struggled, but even with his great strength, he was unable to stop Toothless from pinning him to the ground.

Stoick the Brute and Toothless

Toothless attacking Stoick the Vast

Toothless is about to kill Stoick with a blast of fire, but Hiccup cries "NO!" in despair. Afterward, he chains Toothless in a cruel yoke and uses him as a compass, having discovered that Toothless can be used to find the Dragon's Nest . 🐲

The Night Fury is surprised when Stoick jumps into the water to free him, realizing Hiccup was right about the dragons. When Stoick releases him, Toothless grabs him and pulls him back to the surface rather than letting the leader return on his own. After the Battle of the Red Death, Stoick believes Hiccup is dead. He apologizes to Toothless in a fit of grief, but Toothless reveals that Hiccup is still alive. Stoick the Vast warmly thanks the dragon for saving his son, and the two develop a deep respect for one another.

Stoick the Brute and Toothless

Stoick saving Toothless from the water

In the How to Train Your Dragon spin-off series, Toothless continues to respect Stoick because of his status as chief, but sometimes clashes with his interests when the Viking's stubborn nature comes into play. Rather than confronting him directly, Toothless prefers to avoid confrontation, even at the cost of his own discomfort, as seen in episode 7 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Riders of Berk".

Stoick takes up Toothless's defense without hesitation in episode 13 of "Dragons: Riders of Berk", the friendship between Stoick the Vast and Toothless is quite strong, and it is made even stronger by their mutual love for Hiccup.

In episode 3, season 1 of "Dragons: Race to the Edge", Stoick entrusts Toothless with the care of Hiccup while they explore new lands.

Stoick and Toothless

Stoick the Vast comforting Toothless

In "How to Train Your Dragon 2," their relationship is stronger, as Toothless seems to agree with Stoick the Vast 's decision not to pursue Drago Bloodfist at first. Seeing the chief's happiness when reunited with Valka, he does his best to offer words of encouragement to the entire family. Near the climax, Stoick is accidentally killed by Toothless 's plasma blast when Drago's Ice Beast takes control of his body.

After being temporarily freed, Toothless regains his senses and approaches Stoick's body, unaware of what he has done until Hiccup pulls him away. Realizing his actions, Toothless is devastated by what he has done, even though it was unintentional, but he redeems himself by challenging and defeating Drago's Ice Beast for Berk near the end, thus avenging Stoick.

Stoick's final moments

In "How to Train Your Dragon: The Green Menace", Toothless is still shown to be somewhat responsible for the death of Stoick the Vast .

Astrid Hofferson

Toothless 's first encounter with Astrid is rather unfavorable. He sees her being aggressive towards Hiccup and decides she's a threat. He leaps towards her, ready to pounce, gaping open. Hiccup intervenes, pushes Astrid to safety, and disarms her at the same time. He tries to ease the tension between them, but they still aren't very friendly.

When Astrid goes to report Hiccup and Toothless , they decide to kidnap her. Hiccup eventually manages to convince her to ride with him on Toothless, assuring her there's nothing to fear. But Toothless has other ideas. He leaps into the air and performs a series of dangerous aerial maneuvers until Astrid submits and apologizes. Toothless then smooths out the flight and offers Astrid a magnificent view of Berk from the air. Awestruck by the splendor of the scene, she admits that flying is extraordinary and compliments Toothless .

Astrid Hofferson

From that moment on, she helps Hiccup hide Toothless. Later, Toothless saves her from being devoured by the Red Death and, in doing so, gives her a big, toothless grin. After the Red Death's demise, Astrid is incredibly relieved to see that Toothless managed to save Hiccup.

Throughout "Dragons: Race to the Edge," Astrid develops a stronger bond with Toothless . She rides him when Hiccup and Snotlout are trapped by the Sablokor. Once Astrid and Hiccup become a couple (after the events of episode 11, season 4 of "Dragons: Race to the Edge"), Toothless forms an even closer bond with Astrid , and we see that Stormfly is his best dragon friend. 🐉

Astrid Hofferson and Krokmou

Astrid and Krokmou

In "How to Train Your Dragon 2," Toothless greets Astrid and Stormfly with a big, goofy grin, earning him an affectionate scratch from Astrid before he goes off to play with Stormfly. During his first encounter with Eret, Astrid places a soothing hand on Toothless as he growls at the dragon trappers who captured Stormfly. The relationship between Astrid and Toothless also has a playful side, especially during the dragon race.

Toothless seems to understand Hiccup's feelings for Astrid, and he even teases him about it, notably in the first film and later in episode 12, season 4 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge".

Astrid and Harold riding Toothless

Harold, Astrid and Toothless

In episode 1 of season 2 of "Dragons: Race to the Edge", he particularly encourages Harold when he wants to spend the night with Astrid at the Berk Dragon Training Academy.

In "Dragons: Race to the Edge", episode 5 of season 3, Toothless is worried about Astrid and is very unhappy about the arrival of Viggo Grimborn, who seems very protective.

Astrid and he also seem to be concerned about Harold's well-being and understand each other's importance in his life.

Astrid Hofferson and Krokmou

In episode 9, season 4 of "Dragons: Race to the Edge", Toothless reacts with immediate concern when he learns that Astrid is in danger and immediately tries to save her life.

In episode 11, season 4 of "Dragons: Race to the Edge", Astrid sensed that Stormfly didn't want her and went to Toothless instead, and the Night Fury didn't seem to care the least until Hiccup intervened, defending Stormfly's actions.

In episode 2, season 5 of "Dragons: Race to the Edge", Toothless searched for Astrid when Hiccup was in danger. It was his first solo flight with Astrid .

Zephyr Haddock

In "How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming," after saving Hiccup from a fatal fall, Toothless stumbles upon Hiccup's daughter as he leaves the stage to rejoin his family. Toothless gazes at her curiously with gentle eyes, while the young girl looks back at him in astonishment, until he catches a faint whiff of Hiccup's scent on her, which makes him realize she is Hiccup and Astrid's daughter.

When he realizes she's his best friend's daughter, Toothless gives Zephyr a big, goofy grin and purrs affectionately. Before leaving with his Light Fury and his children, he gives her one last loving look before flying away.

Zephyr Haddock and Toothless

In "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World," when Hiccup formally introduces Zephyr and Edvald, Toothless allows her and his brother to gently touch his snout, just as their father used to do. After riding Stormfly with Astrid for a while, Hiccup takes her with him on Toothless so she can enjoy a flight together.

Valka

Toothless is initially wary of Valka until she demonstrates her ability to communicate with dragons like her son. He then becomes as docile with her as he is with Hiccup, likely due to their familial bond and Valka's years of experience in dragon training. During their first meeting, Toothless seems to greatly enjoy Valka 's company and tries to encourage her to return to Berk so they can become a large family.

Gueulfor

Gobber and Toothless seem to be on good terms. In episode 4 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Riders of Berk," Gobber seems to understand Toothless and vice versa, but he doesn't like Gobber 's comments that put Vikings before dragons. 🐲

Gueulfor

Gueulfor and Krokmou

In "How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming", it is implied that Gobber and Toothless share their sympathy for the loss of Stoick, even years after the events of the previous film.

Rustik Jorgenson

Like Hiccup, Toothless harbors some resentment towards Snotlout . In episode 16 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Riders of Berk", Toothless turned to Snotlout for help in rescuing Hiccup from the Exiles.

Although the two worked well together, Toothless growled at Snotlout when he said he might not return him to Hiccup. Toothless sometimes lashes out at Snotlout Jorgenson , usually when he's annoyed with him or when Snotlout helps him out of a tight spot.

Knowing that he needed a rider, he did not hesitate to put Rustik on his back to save Harold from the lava of the Defenders' volcano in episode 9, season 4 of "Dragons: Race to the Edge".

Varek Ingerman

Toothless seems to be a little kinder to Fishlegs than the other riders. In episode 2 of "Dragons: Defenders of Berk", when Hiccup became attached to Dogmeat, who started attracting metal to his body, Toothless didn't hesitate to let Fishlegs ride him, and didn't do any "scary" maneuvers because he knew Fishlegs wouldn't be comfortable with that.

Kognedur and Kranedur Thorston

Like everyone else, Toothless is annoyed by the twins' antics.

In episode 6, season 2 of "Dragons: Race to the Edge", he is somewhat disgusted at the idea of the twins riding him, but despite this, he allows them to fly with him to save Harold; however, it is quickly proven that the twins are not good at flying Toothless when they collide with Farting and Putter .

In episode 4, season 2 of "Dragons: Race to the Edge", when he almost falls off a cliff, Toothless is the first to rush to save Kranedur , showing that he cares about the twins' safety.

In "Dragons: Race to the Edge", season 6, episode 5, Toothless hits the twins with his tail when they charge at each other, because he doesn't want the twins to hurt each other.

Eret, son of Eret

Toothless was initially angry with Eret for capturing Stormfly, but he quickly forgave him and actively tried to help Hiccup persuade Eret to join their side.

Toothless was happy to see Eret become a rider and gave him a gummy smile when he and Hiccup met Eret and Stormfly during the battle of the Ice Beasts.

Ingrid

Toothless was comfortable enough to let her ride on him, along with Hiccup. His reaction to Ingrid's betrayal isn't shown, but he seems to have forgiven her, since he let her pet him when they said goodbye. When Dagur invited Ingrid to join him, Toothless protected her from the leader of the Parenvrilles.

Toothless was happy to see Ingrid and Sonovent again in "Dragons: Race to the Edge" season 3, episode 7.

Mala

Toothless immediately bonded with Queen Mala , who was of a similar nature to Valka. He was even willing to offer Mala a ride, something he rarely did. When the Great Protector's egg needed to be delivered inside the volcano, Mala chose Toothless for the mission, knowing the Night Fury was faster and more agile than the other dragons. She often scratches him under the chin when the Riders visit Caldeira, showing that she has a closer connection with him than with the other dragons in the Riders' party.

The Light Fury Dragon

Light Fury Toy

Toothless discovered the Light Fury 's presence during a perilous rescue mission, but her camouflage skills prevented her from being spotted visually. Their first encounter took place on Berk, instantly marked by a mutual attraction. However, as he tried to follow her, the Light Fury vanished into the night thanks to her talent for concealment, leaving Toothless bewildered.

This encounter sparked a burning passion in Toothless , fueling his desire to find the Light Fury . His dream came true when the Berkians escaped to New Berk. There, despite the Light Fury 's attempts to keep Hiccup away, Toothless was captivated by her beauty. The Light Fury's subsequent escapes left him once again heartbroken.

Toothless and Light Fury

Toothless and Light Fury

Shortly after the Berkians settled on New Berk, Toothless encountered the Light Fury on a nearby beach, drawn away from the camp by her. She attempted to initiate a courtship display, to which Toothless struggled to respond appropriately. Finally, he won her heart by drawing her face in the sand with a broken branch. The Light Fury tried to pull him away with her, but her missing rudder prevented her.

Thanks to a new automatic rudder built by Hiccup, Toothless gained his independence in the air, allowing him to reunite with the Light Fury. Their reunion led them through a storm, where the Light Fury revealed her secret of vanishing using a plasma blast. After a few tries, Toothless accidentally mastered this ability, rendering them invisible. As they flew over the storm, a tender gesture from Toothless caused the Light Fury to faint. Together, they reached the Hidden World.

Toothless and Light Fury

After the dragons of the Hidden World accepted Toothless as their Alpha, he and the Light Fury celebrated their partnership with a dance. However, their happiness was interrupted when Hiccup and Astrid were chased by other dragons, forcing Toothless to leave his mate.

Although forced to part with the Light Fury , Toothless was overjoyed to discover she had followed them to New Berk. However, their reunion was short-lived, as Grimmel captured them both, forcing the dragons of Berk to surrender.

Toothless and Light Fury

Toothless and Lightning Fury captured by Grimmel

Faced with the Light Fury 's subjugation under the control of Deathgripper's venom, Toothless and Hiccup decided on a new approach to confront Grimmel. Using his camouflage technique, Toothless circled Grimmel while Hiccup flew to rescue the Light Fury. Unfortunately, a poisoned arrow incapacitated Toothless, but Hiccup managed to save the Light Fury before falling with Grimmel. Impressed by Hiccup's courage, the Light Fury rescued Toothless and then swooped back down to retrieve Hiccup.

After Grimmel's defeat, Toothless and the Light Fury joined forces to guide all the dragons of Berk to the Hidden World, ensuring the safety of their human friends. Finally, their own family grew with the arrival of three young dragons: Dash , Pirouette , and Swift , each inheriting a unique blend of their parents' traits.

The Storm Dragon

Throughout the franchise, Toothless and Stormfly share a very close friendship that rivals that of their riders. They seem to enjoy each other's company and are often seen interacting amicably, suggesting they are best friends. Occasionally, Astrid's competitive nature resurfaces in Stormfly , meaning she and Toothless sometimes become aggressive with each other, competing to see who is faster, or even over toys or chewable items.

In "How to Train Your Dragon: Gift of the Night Fury," we see Toothless calling to Stormfly before she departs on her migration. Stormfly signals to Toothless to fly with her to the Rookery, but due to his disability, which prevents him from flying without a rider, Toothless cannot take off. After exchanging songs, shouts, and roars, Toothless watched her depart.

In "How to Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge," they are usually seen chasing each other and playing in the background. Toothless and Stormfly 's friendship is all the stronger because Stormfly's rider is Hiccup's closest human friend and girlfriend. As Hiccup and Astrid grow closer, their dragons also grow closer.

Dragon Storm with Toothless

In the short story Varek imagines about what Berk would be like without the riders leaving for the Edge, in episode 10, season 6 of "Dragons: Race to the Edge," we see Stormfly and Toothless together. However, Stormfly hears the attack while Toothless is still asleep. 😴

In How to Train Your Dragon 2, they are seen chasing each other and playing tug-of-war with a stick on Itchy Armpit (or Stinging Mire). At one point, while chasing each other, they collide with their two riders and knock them to the ground.

When Toothless breaks free from the Alpha's control and calls on other dragons for help, Stormfly is the first dragon to regain his senses and join Toothless's side as he takes up his position. After the Ice Beast's defeat, Stormfly acknowledges Toothless as the new Alpha dragon , bowing before him.

The Night Fury and the Storm Dragon

In "How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World," Stormfly shows interest in joining Toothless and playing with Hiccup's prosthetic leg. However, he growls possessively at it before continuing to chew on the prosthesis. As is usually the case during their play, Stormfly pays no attention.

The Dragon Krochefer

Toothless and Hookfang don't have the same relationship with their riders at all. However, the Monstrous Nightmare has sometimes been very competitive with the Night Fury. They both share a mutual respect. Hookfang and Toothless first met at the Dragon Training Academy. 🐉

Hookfang was trying to kill Hiccup, and Toothless entered the arena to save his friend. The Monstrous Nightmare and the Night Fury engaged in a brief but brutal ground fight. Hookfang retreated but gave Toothless a strange, contemptuous look.

Toothless and Hookfang tolerate each other most of the time, although they rarely have friendly interactions and seem to treat each other with indifference. They do fight sometimes, and when Hookfang went berserk, Toothless didn't hesitate to step in and attack him. 💥

They share a kind of rivalry, which is most clearly manifested in the Thawfest games. The dragons openly growl at each other before the games begin, but this aggression is probably due to the already competitive atmosphere of the Thawfest games and the tension that exists between their masters.

Toothless and Hookfang don't hate each other, but there is very little evidence that they have any affection for one another.

In How to Train Your Dragon 2, Krochefer acknowledged Krokmou as the new Alpha dragon by bowing before him.

The Bulldog Dragon

Toothless showed great friendship with Dogmeat , expressing concern when she was feeling down because Fishlegs had neglected her while she focused on winning the training competition with Terrible Terror. Dogmeat also seems to take an interest in Toothless, as she was willing to help when Hiccup and Fishlegs were trying to cure Toothless of the Eel Effect. They often play together, rolling around, as seen in the first episode of season 5 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge."

In Dragons 2, Bouledogre acknowledges that Krokmou is the new Alpha dragon by bowing before him.

Dragon Fart and Peck

Prout and Pète and Krokmou generally get along well, although the Night Fury looked angry and annoyed when they crushed him and Harold from the sky in episode 6 of season 2 of "Dragons: Race to the Edge".

Toothless usually grabs their tails when he needs to stop them if they're causing trouble, like when they weren't with their masters and went berserk because the twins were fighting, or when they were affected by the dragon root. 🐉

When Kranedur and Kognedur visit the lair of a Hideous Titanwing Braguettaure in episode 5, season 6 of "Dragons: Race to the Edge", Krokmou comforts worried Prout and Pète by petting them.

Towards the end of "How to Train Your Dragon 2", Farting and Pète are among the countless dragons who recognized Toothless as the new Alpha dragon by bowing down before him.

The Torch Dragon

From the moment Toothless discovers the Torch dragon, he instinctively becomes suspicious, but he knows that the young Typhonmrang 's mother is nearby and doesn't want to risk angering her. Hiccup, however, ignores his warnings and takes him to Berk anyway.

From that moment on, Torch began to irritate Toothless mercilessly. He ate all of the Night Fury's fish, stole all of Hiccup's attention, and took over his bed, which made Toothless jealous of the attention the dragon received from Hiccup. Torch seems to be the little brother Toothless never wanted.

When they meet again in episode 9 of "Dragons: Defenders of Berk," Torch returns as an adult dragon. Upon seeing his old rival, the Typhoon smacks Toothless with its tail, and they nearly fight, but Hiccup intervenes. However, Torch allows the Night Fury to ride him after he helps extinguish the forest fire. Although they are still not on good terms, they are no longer as aggressive toward each other.

The Ferkroche Dragon

When he was still wild, Toothless demonstrated his dislike for Ferkroche by roaring furiously. The reason was Ferkroche's lack of accuracy in his attempts to hit the target, thus endangering the riders around them. Later, Toothless showed gratitude to Ferkroche for saving him from a trap.

Ferkroche Dragon

Like other riders, Toothless became very annoyed with Ferrothorn when he stood on his back while Ferrothorn played with him.

The Sonovent Dragon

Sonovent seems to be comfortable with the Night Fury , as they were seen kissing. When Toothless, Stormfly, and Sonovent reunited, they were seen playing together.

Toothless greeted Sonovent joyfully when she and Ingrid returned to Dragonsshore, but the Razorblade growled at him, much to her surprise, as she had become a bit like Ingrid, trying to keep her distance from others. She seemed to calm down a little later, but then attacked Toothless again during a training flight. When Sonovent finally accepted others, the two got along again. Toothless even regurgitated a fish for her, which she accepted.

The Shadow Killer Dragon

In "Dragons: Race to the Edge" season 3, episode 11, Toothless showed that he was helping this dragon, Shadow Killer, to be trained by its new owner, Dagur. Toothless trusts Shadow Killer enough to let him bring Hiccup back to base without him. Toothless also sees that Shadow Killer was willing to sacrifice his life to help his master defeat the dragon hunters. 🐲

Shadow Killer Dragon

The Investigating Dragon

In episode 8 of season 3 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge," Toothless was forced to fight a rampaging Triplattak in the dragon fighting arena. As they battled, Toothless realized he was fighting for his life. Toothless managed to gain the upper hand during the fight, and as he was about to kill the dragon, he saw the Investigator's eyes close, reminding him of his past, as Hiccup had done the same thing to save his life.

Dragon Triplattak Investigator

Dragon Triplattak Investigator vs. Toothless

By successfully showing the Triplattak that it's not necessary to kill others to survive, Toothless manages to tame the wild dragon. The Investigator even flies alongside Toothless , considering him a trustworthy friend, and mimics his smile, tongue sticking out and all.

Unfortunately, by the time of episode 11 of season 4 of "Dragons: Race to the Edge," the Investigator dragon had reverted to a wild dragon on the Edge, as he was still having trouble with humans. Even Toothless couldn't calm his friend down, as the Triplattak even tried to attack him.

However, this could be due to the fact that his natural instincts returned after living in the wild with many dragons and having to hunt for food, whereas he was fed in captivity for a long time.

The Dragon Skullcrusher

Toothless initially disliked Skullcrusher because he thought it was a very wild dragon attacking the Shore. Although he went looking for the dragon, believing it was attacking his family, Hiccup told him to shoot the Hornbrute until Stoick stopped the attack, realizing that the wild dragon was trying to save everyone by driving them away from the Shore before the massive tidal wave hit. Once Toothless grew fond of this new member of the family, they were sometimes seen running together.

In "How to Train Your Dragon 2", Skullcrusher acknowledged Toothless as the new Alpha dragon by bowing before him.

The Dragon Jumper

The two seem to have become friends after learning about the relationship between their riders and often observe each other's behavior during flights. Toothless even displays arrogance towards the dragon Jumper when Hiccup reveals that he can fly alone, unlike Valka.

Toothless repeatedly tries to get the dragon Jumper to play with him, but only manages to elicit a reaction from the largest of dragons when he is showered with snow. After defeating Drago's Ice Beast, Jumper is the first to bow down before Toothless to show his respect.

Jumper Dragon

Dragon Jumper and Toothless

Jumper seems to have a caring big brother attitude towards Toothless, and when he bows down to Toothless at the end, he does so with a hint of pride for Toothless, almost in a fatherly way.

Toothless's enemies

Before meeting Hiccup, Toothless considered all humans to be enemies. It took him time to open up to others. Even after the events of the first film, Toothless still has some humans who were his enemies. 😈

Savage

Toothless has always harbored animosity towards Savage because the latter has always tried to endanger his life and Harold's.

In episode 3 of season 4 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge," Toothless growls at Savage, demanding that the bounty hunter reveal where Hiccup is being taken. Shortly after, Savage insults Hiccup for getting everyone into trouble.

Savage

Savage

Stoick tries to kill Savage in a fit of rage, but Toothless stops his rider's father, knowing that Savage's death won't bring Hiccup back or improve the situation. Their antagonism continued when Savage staged a coup against Dagur in "Dragons: Race to the Edge," season 5, episode 3.

Drago Bloodfist

Toothless harbors a deep hatred for Drago Bloodpoint , especially after witnessing the atrocities committed by his trappers. After Drago used Toothless under the control of the Ice Beast to attack Hiccup and ultimately killed Stoick, the Night Fury showed no mercy, throwing Drago to the ground when he was freed and eventually fighting the madman and his Ice Beast, avenging Stoick.

The Red Dead Dragon

As a member of his herd, Toothless initially feared the Red Death dragon and never dared to rebel against it. However, after Hiccup befriended it, he mustered enough courage to fight the Red Death and defeated it by igniting the gas in its mouth. With the Red Death destroyed, Vikings and dragons were able to coexist.

Alvin the Traitor

Toothless didn't hesitate to confront the leader of the Exiles, nearly threatening to kill him during a loading screen in episode 20 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Riders of Berk." In episode 20 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Defenders of Berk," Toothless doesn't exactly welcome the arrival of Alvin the Traitor alongside Hiccup to rescue Stoick. However, a smile appears on his face when he and Hiccup witness the touching reconciliation between Stoick and Alvin.

Alvin the Traitor

Alvin the Traitor

Mildew

Hiccup dislikes Mildew intensely, who harbors a fierce hatred for dragons. In "How to Start a Dragon Academy," Toothless growls at the old man for mocking Hiccup because he believes dragons can be trained. However, like Alvin, Toothless shows a bit more trust in Mildew after being freed from Dagur's trap by the latter, demonstrating that he is beginning to trust the old man as an ally.

Dragon Mildew

Dagur the Deranged

Toothless shows his ferocious side more when he sees Dagur , as the latter is obsessed with killing Toothless and many other dragons. Toothless began to slowly open up to Dagur in episode 1, season 3 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge," when the Dragonborn tries to change.

Like Hiccup, he didn't trust him, but Dagur helped him create a cure for the dragon root arrow that had been shot at Toothless . He also allowed Dagur to operate on his tail so that the two of them could save Hiccup from the dragon hunters. 🐉

Dagur the Deranged

Dagur the Deranged

When they met again, Toothless was still cautious, but he let Dagur ride him for fun while waiting for Hiccup in "Dragons: Race to the Edge" season 3, episode 11, evidence that Toothless believes Dagur is becoming a better man, and that he is happy to see the Dragonfly riding him.

Toothless was able to encourage Hiccup to trust Dagur because the Night Fury had learned to do the same with his former enemy.

His Nemesis

Toothless's sworn enemy is a Death Whisper from his past. This dragon and he have a serious history, and they are both prepared to fight to the death over this grudge . The events that sparked this feud are unclear, but the Death Whisper bears a large bite mark from its previous battles with Toothless. This Death Whisper arrives in Berk in search of the Night Fury .

The Murmuring Murmur quickly discovers that its old rival is unable to fly, and it uses this to its advantage. The Murmuring Murmur refuses to be trained by Hiccup and nearly eats the boy. Toothless is almost killed when his nemesis tries to knock him off a cliff. Hiccup arrives just in time, and he and Toothless must work together to defeat this powerful enemy. Originally, the Night Fury wanted to settle the score alone, but Hiccup eventually convinced it to accept his help.

Toothless's nemesis

Toothless's nemesis

The cause of this grudge is certainly serious. Toothless is so determined to finish the fight that he fires a plasma blast at Hiccup to make him stop following him. Hiccup is deeply saddened by this, and the Night Fury realizes it, but he is still ready to hurt Hiccup to settle this old rivalry.

Toothless is very attached to Hiccup, and the fact that he risks jeopardizing their friendship for revenge gives a small indication of the depth of his animosity toward the Murmur of Death. In the end, Toothless spares the Murmur of Death after defeating it. His nemesis then quickly retreats, and Hiccup is proud of Toothless for sparing his enemy who, just moments before, had nearly killed them both. They are no longer enemies and consider the matter closed .

Toothless's experience with this dragon made him more aggressive towards other Death Whispers , such as the Death Howl's siblings . However, with certain individuals, like the Death Howl's mother , Toothless retained his aggression towards her.

The Crayfish Dragon of Dagur

Toothless and Dagur's Crayfish meet in episodes 10 and 11 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Defenders of Berk." Toothless was helping Hiccup capture the Crayfish to prevent Dagur from getting his hands on the electric dragon . After several twists and turns, the Crayfish's lightning attack was countered by Toothless's plasma blast, creating a giant electrical explosion that sent Farting and Bleep, the Night Fury , their riders, and the Crayfish itself flying through the air.

Later, Dagur uses the Crayfish to fight Hiccup and Toothless. The Thunder Dragon is hit by the Night Fury's plasma blasts, but they trick Dagur into walking through a puddle, which electrocutes him. The Crayfish , still in the wild, escapes and begins chasing Hiccup and his dragon. They crash into an iceberg, and a chase ensues, the Thunder Dragon's speed and stealth proving almost as good as Toothless 's. 🐉

At one point, the Crayfish loses sight of Hiccup and the Night Fury , but catches a glimpse of their reflections on a wall of ice. It charges the ice wall and knocks itself unconscious. The Crayfish is then refrozen by the twins, Fart and Pete.

In episode 11 of season 2 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge," after three years of freezing, the glacier begins to thaw and is struck by lightning, freeing the Thunder Dragon . After being freed, the Thunder Dragon sets out to find Hiccup and Toothless, as they are the ones who trapped him.

In their first fight in three years, Toothless and the Crayfish clashed, creating a blast of plasma and light that sent the Thunder Dragon fleeing. After a chase to the glaciers, Toothless and Hiccup decided to use the Dragon Slayers to stun the Crayfish, but they arrived too late. By rescuing the wild dragon, Toothless managed to pull its cage out of the water, and the Crayfish returned the favor.

The riders then brought the Thunder Dragon back to the glacier to freeze it again, but Hiccup decided against it. He freed the Crayfish from the net and, after a pause, bowed to Hiccup and Toothless, thus renouncing his revenge. He then flew away, enjoying freedom for the first time in years.

Ryker Grimborn

Toothless has disliked Ryker Grimborn and his fellow dragon hunters ever since he first saw the dragon skeletons aboard the Reaper ship.

Ryker Grimborn

Ryker Grimborn

In episode 3 of season 4 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge," when Ryker captured Hiccup, Toothless was ready to kill him, but Stoick stopped him. In episodes 12 and 13 of season 4 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge," when Ryker Grimborn came to Traitor's Island (unbeknownst to them, to distract the Riders), Toothless didn't trust him and was forced to work with his younger brother Viggo to defeat him.

Viggo Grimborn

Toothless had hated Viggo Grimborn ever since he first met him in episode 13 of season 2 of "How to Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge". In "How to Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge" season 3, episode 12, after Viggo nearly sold Toothless at his auction, Toothless wanted to fight him instead of retrieving Berk's gold.

In "Dragons: Race to the Edge" season 4, episode 13, when Viggo Grimborn joins the Riders to defeat his own brother, Toothless remains wary of him. However, he allows Viggo to ride him. When Ryker's younger brother orders Toothless to stop, he growls and only obeys when Hiccup tells him to.

Viggo Grimborn

Viggo Grimborn

In "Dragons: Race to the Edge" season 6, episode 8, Viggo reveals that the red oleander flower is harmless to dragons and that he never intended to harm the Night Fury. After Viggo Grimborn sacrifices himself to allow Hiccup and Toothless to escape, they forgive the former dragon hunter and thank him for everything he taught them.

Krogan

After Viggo Grimborn's apparent disappearance, Krogan took over as leader of the Dragon Hunters . He is introduced in the episode "Auction Heroes" of Dragons: Race to the Edge, and appears in the final two seasons of "Dragons: Race to the Edge".

They meet again in the episode "Midnight Melee," where Krogan had kidnapped Hiccup. After eliminating Ryker, Toothless immediately recognized him and forced Krogan to retreat from the Edge. In "The King of Dragons, Part 2," Toothless confronts Krogan when he tries to escape with the Ice Beast egg and quickly defeats him with a single tail strike to the face.

It is later revealed that Krogan was employed by Drago Bloodfist to retrieve an Ice Beast and was executed when he failed in his task.

Yohan the Merchant

Yohan is a maritime trader who visits Berk from time to time, offering goods for barter. However, it is later revealed that he is allied with the Dragon Slayers , having secretly worked against the Dragon Riders by pretending to be their ally for years. When Yohan the Trader reveals his true intentions in Sablokor's cave, Toothless doesn't hesitate to turn against him.

Yoann Dragons

Yoann the Merchant

In the episode "The Dragon King, Part 2," Yohan tried to kill Hiccup while the latter was clinging to a cliff, but he was saved when Toothless repelled Yohan with a plasma blast. At the end, the Ice Beast of the Parenvrilles freezes and kills him, preventing him from killing Hiccup with a spear.

Drago's Ice Beast

Like the other dragons , Toothless fell victim to Drago's Ice Beast 's hypnotic abilities and was forced to attack Hiccup, but ended up killing Stoick instead. When he broke free and the Ice Beast attacked Hiccup directly, Toothless used his body to shield him from the icy breath. The Night Fury then challenged the Alpha and defeated him by calling the other dragons to join him before breaking his left tusk, which led to the Night Fury becoming the new Alpha .

Drago's Ice Beast

When Toothless becomes the Alpha of the Hidden World , Drago's Ice Beast is among the countless dragons who cheer him on, showing that he has accepted Toothless as the one true Alpha Dragon . 🐉

Grimmel the Grave

Grimmel is a dragon hunter specializing in hunting Night Furies . It is primarily because of him that Toothless is the last of his kind and his family, and Grimmel intends to finish the job by killing Toothless . The Night Fury hunter almost succeeds in killing Toothless, but Hiccup and the Light Fury intervene, resulting in Grimmel 's death, and thus allowing Toothless to avenge his family.

Grimmel the Grave

Grimmel the Grave

Grimmel's Deathgrippers

Because they were Grimmel's servants , Toothless hated them for having contributed to the extinction of his kind. Chained to the Night Fury killer's airship, Toothless tried to command them, but unbeknownst to him, they were drugged by their venom, rendering them unresponsive to his orders.

Toothless indirectly freed two of them when he tried to shoot Grimmel. However, the other two, who were chained to the airship, were freed during Toothless 's attempt to kill Grimmel. Although they were saved, the four others were drugged with their venom and chased Toothless to lure him and Hiccup away from their master.

Agrippemort Dragon

Grimmel's Deathgripper Dragon

During the fight, two Deathgrippers attempted to attack Hiccup and Toothless as they pursued the Night Fury killer and the drugged Light Fury, but they were defeated when one was thrown down a hill and the other was crushed by a rockfall triggered by Toothless . Two more appeared and continued to harass the pair, trying to lure them away from their master.

The other two caught up with them and formed a circle around Toothless. Desperate to save his companion, he summoned lightning in its Alpha state, electrocuting the four Deathgrippers and sending them plunging into the sea. 🌊
